Health & Safety
Take care of yourself and others to avoid injury or upset (first aid boxes and blankets are in the YELLOW CUPBOARD, in the shed. Emergency contact details are in the purple file in shed, the garden’s address and What Three Words geo-location of the garden is pinned on the dresser by the tea making).
There are hazards in the garden so be particularly careful when handling sharp objects like knives, secateurs, garden forks, bamboo canes and when up ladders. Please keep all knives on the top tiers of the dresser/storage unit in the shed (less easy for children to reach).
In addition, keep hoses, netting and bricks as tidy as possible as tripping on these items are risks. If at the garden on your own it is wise to let others know you are there. If you arrive at the garden to find others there that you do not know, please introduce yourself and get their name as you’ll need this if you have to find their details to call their emergency contact.
Call for help if needed – dial 999 in an emergency; Dial the NHS on 111 if it is not an emergency but you still need medical advice. You can ring Lynsted Park House 01795 521145/07766 464229, they may be able to help.
The purple file has a list of member’s emergency contacts (but you will need to know people’s names to use it!)
The purple file has a list of any medical condition that members have agreed to disclose, it is helpful to be aware of these in an accident/emergency situation.
First Aid – x2 boxes of medical supplies in the Yellow Cupboard + blankets. If you use something from the box, please let the group know via Whatsapp, so it can be replaced. There is a first aid manual with the box.
Be mindful of your own safety before or when assisting others.
Accident and ‘Near Miss’ recording must be completed - to mitigate future disasters – BOOK beside the purple file - all entries must be factually detailed and dated. Please inform Jacqui or Vanessa if you have made an entry in the book.
A list of LCKG members with first aid certification is in the purple file (there may not always be someone at the garden with first aid knowledge)
Prior to an Event with outside visitors a Risk Assessment should be completed before hand and reviewed after the event.
Steps should be taken to protect members and create a safe environment with regard to highly infectious/communicable diseases (and future pandemics). Wearing gloves, social distancing and cleaning of tools, or simply using your own tools, are all additional strategies that can be used. If you are unwell with a contagious condition, it’s best to avoid the garden or check that no one else is there.
Respect the health of the landscape, wildlife and property around you. Don’t leave litter. Avoid any unnecessary use of either electricity or water. Don’t leave car engines running or drive on verges or grass in wet conditions.
Single use plastic is not allowed, please avoid this. There are plastic items at the garden but they are durable and long term. If you aren’t sure about an item of plastic please just ask.
Please do not share the padlock code with anyone outside the group (the gate will be unlocked on open days and events) and remember to relock the gate if you are the last to leave the garden.
