Community Composting

LCKG would like to expand the scale and breadth of our compost making and waste recycling. By recycling the food waste from the households of our members and from residents in our catchment we aim to convert food waste to compost. To do this we will need a Ridan Pro System 200. This eco food waste recycling system would allow us to process up to 10 tonnes of food waste per year.
Why is it important to do this? An estimated 11.8 million tonnes of food waste ends up on landfill in the UK alone. Not only does this release carbon dioxide but can also result in toxic liquid effluent leaching in to soils and water.

Why and how can we run a successful food recycling project? We have a growing membership of 60 members from 36 households who regularly visit the garden. Many already bring material for our conventional composting piles so expanding this to food waste is a logical and achievable extension. Furthermore, within our 6 mile-radius catchment there are households members can collect waste from on a regular basis - neighbours, family and friends - to bring to the garden. The process of community collecting allows us to chat to people and thus share ideas about waste recycling.

Costs: £5580 (inc VAT) + maturation boxes £1,152 inc VAT)
